Through this experience, students not only admired the architectural beauty but also learned about the Truc Lam Zen sect. Founded by Emperor Tran Nhan Tong at the end of the 13th century and the beginning of the 14th century, Tran Nhan Tong was a talented king of the Tran dynasty, renowned not only for his success in battles against the Yuan-Mongol invaders but also for his significant contributions to Vietnamese Buddhism.

Tran Nhan Tong abdicated the throne in 1299, withdrew into a life of meditation, and founded the Truc Lam Zen sect. He chose Yen Tu Mountain in Quang Ninh as the place for his practice and established a strong center for Zen learning. This is why the Truc Lam Zen sect is often referred to as the Yen Tu Truc Lam Zen.

Truc Lam Zen is one of the prominent Zen schools in Vietnamese Buddhism, with a profound impact on the history and culture of the nation. The Truc Lam sect is not only a Zen tradition originating from the Tran dynasty but also a significant part of the cultural and spiritual heritage of the Vietnamese people.
